Facts:

• Dryers and washing machines were a factor in 1 of every 25 house fires reported in the U.S. between 1999 and 2002.

• The leading cause of home dryer and washer fires was failure to clean (30%), followed by mechanical failures or malfunctions (19%).

 Safety Tips:

• Have your dryer installed and serviced by a professional

• Clean the lint filter before and after every load

• Periodically check the outside exhaust while the dryer is running to make sure air is escaping normally

• Clean behind the dryer where lint often times builds up

• Use caution when drying clothes that have been soiled with volatile chemicals such as gasoline, oils or stains

• Make sure the dryer is plugged into an outlet that is suitable for its electrical needs

• Never leave the house while the dryer is running!
