STORM WATER POLLUTION PREVENTION

PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT

What can I do to help?

While many times people think the problem is too big and there isn't possibly anything they can do this is not the case with storm water. With the public's help, our streams, lakes, rivers, and oceans can be cleaner then they have ever been. Just consider these helpful hints and remember that what goes down our storm sewer will eventually end up in our water.

Pick up litter
Rake your leaves and clean your gutters often
Direct roof water to your lawn
Plant rain gardens if your site allows
Plant ground cover to help soak up water
Limit the use of fertilizers
Limit the use of pesticides
Use natural products to prevent chemicals from entering waste water
Limit the use of de-icing salt
Fix automobile leaks as soon as possible
Wash your car at a car wash or on your lawn rather than the driveway
Pick up your pet's waste every time
Never dump into storm drains
Properly dispose of hazardous waste (i.e. anti-freeze, oil) at approved recycling centers
